Perhaps the most popular character in my Dru Jasper series is Hellbringer, a black 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that is literally possessed by a speed demon.

Man, that’s tough to beat. But yeah, that’s pretty much the essence of my book.
There’s another video I’d like to share with you that reveals a second big inspiration behind this book, but — SPOILER ALERT! — it hints at a major plot twist. So if you want to avoid the spoiler, stop reading now.

In my research into abandoned places in Colorado, I discovered Project Rulison. I can’t believe anyone thought this was a good idea. Here’s Walter Cronkite’s news report:
What the news doesn’t tell you is that:
- Nobody knew for sure the radioactivity would be contained. If the debris hadn’t blocked the bore hole as expected, the entire town could have been contaminated. That 40 kiloton bomb was bigger than both WWII bombs combined.
- The natural gas they drilled for — the whole point of it — was contaminated by the nuclear blast, so it was rendered useless. The entire project produced nothing but radioactive waste.
- Once they realized the project was actually a failure, the drilling company just packed up and left, leaving the hole open and exposed to the elements. The government didn’t even cover it with a concrete plug until almost a decade later. They still have to test it periodically to make sure it doesn’t become dangerous.
Whew. Scary stuff.
Luckily, my book is just fiction! Car chases, magic, larger-than-life villains, and a hint of sweet romance. It’s just all-around good fun.
