Making Fascinating Monsters on The Bibliosanctum

The BibliosanctumHow do writers create fascinating monsters?

For me, it’s a many-layered process that involves thinking about where a monster came from, what it’s after, how it thinks, and what happens when it encounters the heroes.

I actually got the chance to dive deep into the monster-creation process and explain how to do it step-by-step, thanks to the marvelous Mogsy over at Bibliosanctum, the super-fabulous speculative fiction blog.

You can read my guest post here.

P.S. You can also get access to your own monster-making workbook when you get my author newsletter.

“As much fun as you can have reading about impending doomsday!”

The wait is over! Forever and a Doomsday releases today (yay!) and the reviews are already pouring in. Here’s an absolutely fabulous recap of the entire series (that doesn’t give away any spoilers) from Fan Girl Nation:

Mixing together the atmospheric flavor of the action sequences from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, airy hints of classic rock music, with a backdrop of fire and brimstone, comes the Dru Jasper series written by Laurence Naughton. This is an urban fantasy novel that hits the right combo the nostalgic vibes for the urban fantasy shows of the 90s/2000s in novel form. Except instead of picture perfect adults playing teenagers, this series has flawed and relatable adults doing the best they can while not ultimately freaking out…

Click here to read the whole review.

P.S. I’m giving away cool freebies — paperback books et cetera — to my newsletter subscribers. So if you haven’t joined yet, here’s your chance.

A chilling cohort of soul-devouring wraiths has risen from the netherworld to crack open the final seal of the apocalypse scroll and bring the world to a fiery end.

To keep the scroll out of their clutches, Dru must solve a 2,000-year-old magical mystery, find a city lost in the netherworld, and unearth a crystal older than the Earth itself.

As the clock runs out, Dru is locked in a high-octane chase with a pack of killer shape-shifters, the grim mystery of a radioactive ghost town, and the most powerful speed demon on Earth.

Book Signing with Molly Tanzer at BookBar

A little over a year ago, I did one of my favorite book events of all time. I joined New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn and the fabulous J.L. Forrest at the BookBar.

It’s a bookstore. And a bar. Brilliant.

The place was packed. People were having a great time. Everything was so completely overwhelming and amazingly exciting.

Not only was it fun, it was also meaningful, because we all got to sit down and have thought-provoking conversations with readers.

Also, since there was plenty of wine everywhere, us authors sounded pretty brilliant. ; )

This week I’ll be heading back to the Bookbar. This time, I’m teaming up with the amazing Molly Tanzer, author of Creatures of Will and Temper. She’ll be reading from the next book in the series, Creatures of Want and Ruin, which moves the action from Victorian London to Prohibition-era Long Island.

I, of course, will be reading from No Sleep Till Doomsday. (Funny urban fantasy with crystal magic and demon-possessed muscle cars. Unyielding mayhem. You know the drill.)

Come join us and have a great time!

The real life inspiration behind No Sleep till Doomsday

Perhaps the most popular character in my Dru Jasper series is Hellbringer, a black 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that is literally possessed by a speed demon.

In my new book, No Sleep till Doomsday, our anti-hero Hellbringer has a brand-new nemesis, a 2018 Dodge Demon named Soulbreaker.

If you’re even thinking about reading my book, you’re going to want to watch this video.

Whoa!

Man, that’s tough to beat. But yeah, that’s pretty much the essence of my book.

There’s another video I’d like to share with you that reveals a second big inspiration behind this book, but — SPOILER ALERT! — it hints at a major plot twist. So if you want to avoid the spoiler, stop reading now.

(By the way, if you haven’t signed up for my author newsletter yet, and you want to be entered to win free books and other cool stuff, click here.)

But if you DO want to read about this big mysterious inspiration (and you can’t say I didn’t warn you), here it is:

Yours Truly rocks the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers podcast

Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers podcastTrue story: at the RMFW conference this year, I bumped into my good friend Mark Stevens, an award-winning author and host of the Rocky Mountain Writer podcast. Somehow, we got to talking about weird musical instruments.

I’ve just started playing one of the weirdest of all, the theremin. It’s the original electronic instrument, one that you play just by waving your hands at it. It’s been featured in plenty of old black and white science fiction movies.

Mark was like, “Why don’t you play it on our podcast?”

And I was like, “Wow! That’s a terrifying idea! Let’s do it!”

(And also, somewhere in there, we talked about my writing, too.)
